The first South African coins were struck in gold, silver, and bronze, and featured the portrait of President Paul Kruger. These coins were issued in denominations of 3d, 6d, one, two, two half, and five shillings, and became known as the “Kruger Pond” coins. Many of these coins in superior condition are traded by collectors on the online auction sites. Damaged and worn coins have a much lower value.
