South African Silver Coin Price Lists

The history of South African money dates back to the 17th century, when various forms of currency were used by European settlers and indigenous peoples in the region. However, the modern South African currency system can be traced back to 1892, when the South African Republic (also known as the Transvaal) began issuing its own coins.

The first South African coins were struck in gold, silver, and bronze, and featured the portrait of President Paul Kruger. These coins were issued in denominations of one, two, and five shillings, and became known as the “Kruger Pond” coins.

In 1923, the Union of South Africa was formed, uniting several British colonies and republics into a single country. The new government established a central bank, the South African Reserve Bank, and introduced a new currency known as the South African pound, which was pegged to the British pound.

In 1961, South Africa became a republic, and the currency was changed to the rand. The new currency was named after the Witwatersrand, a gold-mining region in South Africa. The rand was initially pegged to the US dollar, but was later allowed to float freely on international currency markets.

Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, South Africa experienced significant political and economic changes, including the end of apartheid and the transition to a democratic government. The rand remained the country’s currency throughout these changes, and continues to be used as the official currency of South Africa today.

Over the years, the design of South African coins and banknotes has evolved to reflect the country’s history, culture, and natural resources. Commemorative coins and banknotes have also been issued to celebrate significant events and milestones, such as the country’s hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
