Guide to Selling your South African Silver Coins

If you are looking to sell your South African silver coins, you need to be aware of some important factors. South African silver coins come in different dates and denominations, and their value depends on their rarity and condition. This guide will help you sort  and identify the silver coins.
Note: I only purchase silver coins, not copper or bronze ones. I also do not buy the Mandela R5 coins.
You can find the dates, images and prices of the South African silver coins on the South African Coin Price List Pages.

How to identify my South African Silver Coins
South African Silver Coins fall into 3 categories.

ZAR Coins *1892-1902* – Union Coins *1923-1960* – Rand Coins *1961-To Date*

ZAR Coins - *1892-1897*

The President Kruger silver coin series refers to a set of silver coins that were also minted by the South African Republic (ZAR) during the presidency of Paul Kruger. The series included coins in denominations of 5 shillings, 2 1/2 shillings, 2 shillings, 1 shilling, 6 pence and 3 pence which were minted between 1892 and 1897.

Union Coins - *1923-1960*

Union coins vary in silver content. Coins minted 1923-1950 will have a higher value than coins minted 1951-1960.
3d (tickey) Key Date: 1931 – 6d – 1 shilling – 2 shilling – 2 ½ shilling – 5 shilling

Rand Coins - 1961 - to date

Only the 5 cents – 10 cents – 20 cents – 50 cents – dated from 1961 to 1964 are silver coins
NB: (All the above coins minted from 1965 onward have no silver value, they are nickel coins)

SA *R1 (one rand)* coins 1965 - 1976

Silver R1 coins were only minted for special occasions from 1970 to 1976. These coins are not circulated in the market and can only be found in collectors sets. To determine if your R1 coins are made of silver, you can use a simple test with a magnet. Just place the magnet near the coin and see if it attracts or repels it. If the coin sticks to the magnet, it is not silver and has no value beyond its face value. I am willing to buy any silver R1 coins that you have, as well as the silver commemorative series that are issued from time to time.
