United States of America

The first silver coins issued by the U.S. Mint were the half dime, dime, quarter, half dollar, and dollar, all designed by George T. Morgan. The silver content and weight of these coins were set by the Coinage Act of 1792, which also authorized gold coins of various denominations. The U.S. silver coins circulated alongside foreign coins until 1857, when they were declared legal tender.
